One Year’s Tomato Journal Can Easily Inform Another

Selection of fresh picked tomatoes
It's easy to think we will remember everything about our tomato gardens; this journal guarantees you'll have the information you want for making growing decisions next year, and in years to come.

While it seems like we will always remember all the points and details about our gardens from year to year, the fact is that it can be difficult to recall what worked, what didn’t, what was enough, what wasn’t, and where we intended to go from here.

By keeping just a few meaningful notes, you can easily remember what it was you wanted to recall when it comes time for seed starting or planting in the next year.

This Tomato Garden Tracker serves as an at-a-glance journal, of sorts, that captures all the most important information, with room for notes of your own!

We’ve tried to include all the major points and details we want to know about our tomato growing, and that we think you’d find useful, too!

Keeping Track of the What, When, How, and Why of Your Tomato Garden

Thriving tomatoes in the garden
What varieties did great? Which fell victim to diseases? Which do you need more of?

Use this simple, organized sheet to keep track of the essentials, like:

  • What varieties did you grow
  • Whether you started them from seed, and when
  • If you grew from purchased transplants
  • When the tomatoes started and stopped bearing
  • What did you use the tomatoes for
  • Overall yields
  • Other notes and observations

Having details like this can tell you things like:

How do you need to adjust your tomato growing? With this information at hand, next year you'll know!
  • Whether you should grow more of a certain type or variety
  • If you need to start seeds earlier for better transplants (or later because they grew too large, too fast)
  • If your garden season and dates are right, or need adjusting earlier or later
  • What varieties worked best for different uses (like canning, making sauce, salsa, drying, or eating fresh)
  • If diseases or failures were a problem
  • Which varieties struggled the most
  • Or, which varieties were stellar performers!
  • Which varieties fell victim to local diseases
  • Or which varieties fought off pest and disease pressure and produced anyway
  • Whether more indeterminate varieties would suit you better
  • Or whether determinate tomatoes serve your purposes better
  • Whether and what mix of types you should grow
